  • Pup-Peroni: $1 off select 22.5 oz bags, including Original Beef, Bacon, Triple Steak, and Filet Mignon & Bacon.

Now is a good time to learn more about Smucker's pet portfolio and review your pet set to help grow sales before the end of the year.

Winning Pet Brands: Meow Mix, Milk-Bone, Pup-Peroni, and more

The J.M. Smucker Co. has a significant presence in pet care, holding leadership positions in both dog and cat categories. Its U.S. Retail Pet Foods segment primarily includes Meow Mix, Milk-Bone, Pup-Peroni, and Canine Carry Outs branded products.¹ According to Smucker's fiscal 2026 annual report, it leads in dog snacks through the Milk-Bone brand and in dry cat food through Meow Mix.³ Dry food is the core of the cat business, representing about 85% of Smucker's cat food portfolio, where the company continued to gain dollar share.²

Smucker's pet and grocery brands also cross over. They developed the Milk-Bone Peanut Buttery Bites line through a collaboration between Milk-Bone and Jif, and the company deemed it the leading dog snack launch in the past four years.³

Why Americans Prioritize Their Pets

Pets are part of the family in most American homes, and owners are protecting them even as budgets tighten. In 2025, 95 million U.S. households owned at least one pet.⁴ Spending continues to grow as well: pet industry expenditures reached $158 billion in 2025 (+3.7%) and are projected to reach $165 billion in 2026.

According to Peter Scott, APPA president and CEO, "We forecast the industry's expenditures to top $250 billion by 2030."⁴

About half of pet owners reported that their pet spending was unchanged in 2025, even with ongoing economic pressure.⁵

Ownership is expanding across age groups. Gen X emerged as an important contributor to pet ownership expansion, with Gen X dog ownership up 12% year over year and cat ownership up 8%.⁴

What this Means for Grocers

Pet owners aren't cutting back on their pets. They're getting more selective about how they spend. Owners are shifting spending away from discretionary items and toward essential care.⁴ Food is one of the protected essentials, making up 27% of dog owners' pet spending.⁵

That shift favors the grocery store. According to APPA, 32% of dog owners purchase dog food at supermarkets, up 7% year over year. Feeding habits are also changing: premium food is still the most common choice at 31%, but more owners are mixing in budget-friendly options, and feeding of basic dog food rose 11% to reach 21% of owners.⁵

Treats remain part of the routine, with value in mind. Average treat spending fell 11%, even as purchases of 11 or more treat packages per year increased. Chews are also gaining ground, with 65% of dog owners buying them in 2025, up 5%.⁵

On the cat side, Smucker's expects continued Meow Mix growth, driven by rising cat ownership among younger generations.² For grocers, familiar brands in large-format bags and value-size treats, paired with digital offers, match what these shoppers are looking for.
