With dwindling supply driving egg prices higher and unemployment nearing an all-time record, IGA Red Oval partner Dutch Farms recently pitched in to help Northwest Indiana residents by partnering with The Food Bank of Northwest Indiana for the inaugural “Eggstravaganza” on Tuesday, May 5. Together, they provided more than 500,000 eggs to the residents of Northwest Indiana. The event ran from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. and saw half-mile lines for most of the day. Residents were invited to pick up as many eggs as needed (or that they could carry).
The food bank set up social distancing stations and enacted safety precautions for all. “Dutch Farms presented a meaningful, relevant, and generous solution by offering to donate eggs for anyone who needs them,” said Food Bank of Northwest Indiana Executive Director Victor A. Garcia.
It's especially important to Dutch Farms to help out Northwest Indiana residents, as the organization was born in the basement of the founder's home in Highland, Indiana and resided in Northwest Indiana for a number of years before moving to their Chicago offices. Dutch Farms' owners, the Boomsma family, still reside in Northwest Indiana.
“Dutch Farms is always happy to share our blessings. Northwest Indiana is our home and we are thrilled to do our part to make sure everyone has the food and resources they need to navigate this difficult time,” said Dutch Farms Senior Vice President Joel Boomsma.
