This past March, IGA brought the excitement of tournament season straight into stores with its Slam Dunk Snacking shopper event, a high-energy campaign designed to position independent grocers as watch-party headquarters during one of the year's most engaging retail windows.
Featuring recipes and offers from BODYARMOR, Coca-Cola, Impossible, La Colombe, Wonderful Halos, and Wonderful Pistachios, the campaign ran throughout the NCAA men's basketball tournament and delivered strong results through the National Digital Ads:
For independent retailers, those numbers tell a clear story.
"Slam Dunk Snacking is a great example of how a simple, well-timed promotion can drive real results for our stores," IGA SVP Brand Development Michael La Kier said. "Nearly 1.4 million verified store visits shows just how much shoppers are responding to these moments and how much value these campaigns bring to our retailers at no extra cost to them."
With another successful shopper event in the books, let's break down what made Slam Dunk Snacking a win, and what's on deck next.
The campaign gave shoppers fan-friendly recipes, entertaining tips, and exclusive digital offers to help them build the ultimate March Madness basketball spread. IGA supported retailers with a full toolkit: downloadable social media graphics, a shopper-facing blog, placement in the National Digital Ad, and in-store display materials themed around the tournament.
Like previous shopper events, this plug-and-play program required no extra lift or budget from IGA retailers; everything store teams needed to participate was provided at no cost.

Slam Dunk Snacking hit on the same marketing principles that have made past IGA shopper events successful:
1. Simple Execution
Retailers received ready-to-use social graphics, blog content, and in-store display guidance, making it easy for store teams to launch the campaign without added workload.
2. High Shopper Engagement
March Madness watch parties gave shoppers a built-in reason to stock up, and the campaign's snack-and-beverage focus turned everyday trips into bigger baskets.
3. Traffic-Driving Results
With nearly 1.4 million store visits and over 7.5 million digital impressions, the campaign proved its ability to bring shoppers through the door while reinforcing IGA stores as the go-to destination for game-day essentials.
Slam Dunk Snacking is another example of a national campaign framework that independent grocers can adapt for their own communities. The mechanics — recipes, offers, and watch-party positioning — can flex to fit:
The core stays the same; what changes is the local flavor that makes each event feel relevant to shoppers in that store's community.
