Beverages are the No. 1 driver of grocery trips and total store dollars, according to NielsenIQ*, growing $13.3 billion last year. And soft drinks are the key driver, growing the most in the category at $4.9 billion.
Coca-Cola is the clear brand driving growth, and they are bringing a new innovation to the category: Coca-Cola Spiced. The new – and permanent – flavor blends traditional Coke with raspberry and spiced flavors and will be available both in full sugar and zero-sugar varieties.
"As leaders of the category, it's our job to expand it by recruiting new users and driving greater frequency, and we continue to do so successfully," said Brad Morris, Coca-Cola global accounts director, IGA. "But we know there’s opportunity to trail blaze more growth for Coca-Cola and the sparkling soft drink category."
Coca-Cola Spiced is a true category disruptor, Morris said, from a company with a long history of disrupting the category. In 1886, Coca-Cola built the soda category, in 1963 they launched TAB, the first mass-produced zero calorie soda. 1982 brought Diet Coke, which shaped the diet category, and 2005 saw the launch of Coke Zero, shaping the zero category. Now Coca-Cola is betting on Coca-Cola Spiced.
"We know this will disrupt based on category growth trends, feedback from consumers, and consumer trends for bold and unique flavors as a reflection of self expression," Morris said. "It's unlike anything we’ve done before. We are pushing boundaries with formula composition to bring a truly unique offering to the category, a blend of cola and flavor unlike anything else."
With a launch campaign running February-April, including a March Madness integration, Morris is helping independent grocers make the most of this new product by sharing a planogram and the UPCs to have in-stock.
